What is non-destructive entry?

Locksmiths are generally called out to a home or business due to: being locked out, either keys have been left inside or lost. The normal way of gaining entry to the building without causing damage is by lock picking method known as non-destructive entry.

Non-destructive entry [NDE] is entry cost locks via manipulation [lock picking] or bypassing, without causing any impact physically to doors, keeps or locks. The policy at KeyChange locksmiths [unless the customer requests] is to attempt NDE for all call-outs. While sometimes this turns out to be impractical, the decision is left with the consumer. This does not mean that destructive entry is destructive, it just means that in order to gain entry the lock can be destroyed and a new lock is required to be fitted.

Non-destructive entry, how does it work?

To pick a lock, specialist tools are required to manipulate components inside of the lock, thus allowing entry without a key. Locksmiths prefer to use this method because it causes neither the lock or the door to become damaged whilst gaining entry to the property. If the locksmith comes across a broken lock that is unable to be picked, drilling the lock may be the only option, which would cost more money whilst having to install a new lock

Lock picking is a centuries-old craft, back since the first locks were invented around the 1700s by Barronin; the original being called a double acting tumbler. In order to open a warded lock, a skeleton key would be used. These skeleton keys were designed specifically to bypass the wards inside the lock.

Two tools are involved in lock picking, one is used to apply pressure, the other is used to move the teeth preventing the bolt from moving. Different sized shaped and aligned components make moving the teeth possible. Different locks require different methods of lock picking.
